Project in Brief

The Wang Medium Irrigation Project is situated in the Krishna Basin in Maharashtra. This project envisages construction of the following components.

  1. 1200 m long earth dam with the maximum height of 50.63 m across river Wang, a tributary of Krishna River near village Marathwadi in Patan Taluka of Satara district.
  2. 55.50 m long ogee-shaped spillway on the left flank having 4 radial gates of size 12 m x 5 m to pass flood discharge of 1722 m3/s.
  3. 50 m long non-overflow blocks on left side of spillway and 49.50 m long non-overflow block on the right side of the spillway.
  4. Irrigation-cum-Power Outlet (ICPO) on left flank with discharging capacity of 5.95 m3/s to release water in the river from the reservoir.
  5. A powerhouse with the installed capacity of 3 MW (2 X 1.50 MW) to generate electricity.
  6. A series of 10 KT weirs d/s of the dam along the Wang river through which water would be lifted to provide an annual irrigation to 7068 ha in Patan and Karad talukas of Satara district.
  7. In all, 46 villages will get irrigation benefits from this project and 7068 ha of the ultimate irrigation potential would be created. No CAD works are proposed under the project. The project will also provide 5.63 Mm3 water for domestic use and 2.83 Mm3 water for industrial use.

The execution of the project started in 1997-98. The project was approved by the Planning Commission, Govt. of India on 20.09.2007 for an estimated cost of Rs. 162.78 crore at 2005-06 price level after its acceptance by the Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) in its 89th meeting.

Present Status

The project was included in AIBP during 2008-09 in March 2009. At the time of inclusion of the project under AIBP, 60% works of earth dam, 20% works of spillway and non-overflow blocks, 50% works of ICPO and 30% works of the K. T. Weirs were completed. The balance works of the earth dam, spillway and non-overflow blocks, ICPO and K.T. Weirs for creation of the ultimate irrigation potential of 7068 ha were included in AIBP. Upto March 2011 potential created is 615 hectare.
