Brief Description of the Project

The Varahi Project situated in the Udupi District of Karnataka State envisages construction of a diversion weir across Varahi river near Siddapura to make use of the tail race discharge from Varahi Hydel Scheme. It benefits Udupi and Kundapura taluks of Udupi district. The project was approved by the State Planning Department for Rs 569.53 crore (2005-06 price level). The ultimate irrigation potential envisaged under the project is 15702 ha.

Main Components of Varahi Irrigation Project:

A. Wier and Allied Works:

A diversion weir of 147.40 m length with a maximum height of 16 m across Varahi river at Horiabbe near Siddapura with a storage capacity of 1.005 TMC, utilization of 0.943 TMC, total atchkut of 15702 ha for a discharge of 31.15 cumec from the tail race of Varahi Hydel project. The beneficiary taluks are:

a. Kundapura Taluk 33 villages 8324 ha

b. Udupi Taluk 35 villages 7378 ha


B. Canals and Branches

i. Varahi Right Bank Canal for a length of 42.73 km to irrigate an area of 1992 ha including its distributaries and minors which includes Varahi Right Bank Common Canal from 0 to 18.2 km.

ii. Varahi Left Bank Canal for a length of 44.35 km taking-off from km 18.419 of Right Bank canal through a major river aqueduct to irrigate an area of 10987 ha including its distributaries and minors.

iii. Varahi Lift Canal (from ch. 6.10 km of VLBC) for a length of 33.00 km long to irrigate an area of 2723 ha including its distributaries and minors

Present Status

The project was brought under AIBP during 2008-09 and so far the Weir is completed in all respect and the canal network is under progress. Upto March 2012 irrigation potential of 1100 hectare is created against 15702 hectare.
