Project Description

The Utawali Medium Irrigation Project is being constructed in the Tapi Basin in the Buldhana district of Maharashtra. The project envisages construction of 1856 m long earth dam with the maximum height of 26 m and 345.60 m long semi-circular ungated spillway on river Utawali and Lendi Nalla near Deulgaon Sakarsha village in Mehkar Taluka of Buldana district. The canal system consists of 17.51 km long Right Bank Canal (RBC) and the Distribution Network on RBC to cater to the Culturable Command Area (CCA) of 4650 ha. The project on completion will create the annual ultimate irrigation potential of 5394 ha in Mehkar Taluka of Buldhana district; Patur Taluka and Balapur Taluka of Akola district. The project will also provide 2.878 Mm3 water for domestic use to Balapur city. Other benefits include fisheries.

The construction work on the project was started in September 1999. The project was approved by the Planning Commission for an estimated cost of Rs. 35.78 crore at 1996-97 price level in October 2006.

The project was included in AIBP under PM Package for the Vidarbha Region during 2006-07. At the time of submission of the proposal i.e. up to March 2006, 98% earth dam, 25% works on the main canal/branch canals and 10% works of Distributaries and Minors were complete. About 320 ha of irrigation potential has been created till 03/2006. The balance works of the project along with construction of watercourses to create the remaining 5074 ha of the ultimate irrigation potential were included in AIBP. The project is completed during 2009-10.
