Project in Brief

The Upper Wardha Project is located on river Wardha, Godavari basin in Amravati district of Maharashtra. The project has following components

  1. 5588.50 m long earthen dam with maximum height of 39.90 m and 331.50 m long concrete dam with 240.50 m long central spillway with maximum height of 46.20 m and non over flow blocks of 91 m length across river Wardha near Simbhora village, Tehsil Morshi of Amravati district. The reservoir created will have gross storage capacity of 678.27 MCM and live storage capacity of 564.05 MCM.
  1. 240.50 m long gated ogee shaped central spillway with 13 radial gates of size 15m x 12m to pass designed flood of 19.57 cubic meter/sec.
  2. 42.40 km long left bank canal and 95.50 km long right bank canal having discharge capacity of 10.42 cumec/second and 37.00 cumec/second respectively

The project was approved by planning commission in May 1976 for an estimated cost of 39.88 crore with potential of 75080 ha and CCA 83330. The project will also provide 79.719 million cubic meter water for domestic use.
The project was started in the year 1976 and is completed during XI five- year plan and full irrigation potential has been created. Total expenditure on the project is Rs 978.75 crore upto end of XI plan.
