Project in brief

Singhpur Medium Irrigation Project of Madhya Pradesh envisages construction of barrage across river Urmil, a tributary of river Ken in Yamuna basin, with a left bank canal syatem to provide annual irrigation to 10,200 ha (Kharif: 4,800 ha + Rabi: 5,400 ha) in Chhatarpur district of Madhya Pradesh. The project was originally planned in the year 1979-80 to use MP’s share of Urmil river waters for providing irrigation facilities in the down stream areas of Urmil dam in Chhatarpur district of Madhya Pradesh. The project proposes to use MP’s share of Urmil water and water from the independent catchment of 257.71 sq. km between Urmil dam and Singhpur barrage in Madhya Pradesh territory and MP’s share of water kept as up stream reserve which is proposed to be regulated through carry over capacity as provided in Urmil dam for providing assured Kharif and Rabi irrigation.

Singhpur Medium irrigation Project (Madhya Pradesh) envisaged construction of following components-

4259.50 metre long earthen dam (on either flank) with maximum height of 12.00 metre.

240.50 metre long concrete barrage with 12 nos. gates of size 12.25 m X 9.60 m with a maximum discharge capacity of 7,528 cumecs.

A left bank main canal 26.50 km long with head discharge of 7.00 cumecs with 104 km of distibutary/ minors to irrigate 10,200 ha annually with an irrigation intensity of 170%.

Techno-Economic Appraisal

The project was accepted by TAC of MoWR in its 101st meeting held on 30.11.2009 and investment clearance accorded by Planning Commission vide letter No. 20(12)/2010-WR dated 25.03. 2010 for an estimated cost of Rs. 200.52 crore at PL 2009 (cost of I-work is Rs 189.64 crore) to irrigate 6,000 ha (CCA)/ 10,200 ha (Ann. Irr.).

Present Status

The project was started in the year 2007-08 and in the year 2011-12 it is was brought under AIBP and its target date of completion is 2014. The barrage and canal network is under construction and so far no irrigation potential is created.
