Brief Description of the Project

Background

Sharda canal system is one of the biggest and oldest irrigation systems of Uttar Pradesh. It was constructed in the year 1928 to provide irrigation in 25.5 lac Hectare and to protect the area lying in Ganga-Ghaghra doab. The Sarda Main Canal takes off from river Sarda at Banbasa, district Champawat in Uttarakhand State. The project provides benefit to 15 districts namely Pilibhit, Lakhimpur Kheri, Shahajahanpur, Hardoi, Unnao, Lucknow, Barabanki, Pratapgarh, Sultanpur, Faizabad, Jaunpur, Azamgarh, Gazipur, Allahabad and Varanasi.

With the development in agricultural technology, cultivation started in more areas of the command resulting increase in the water consumption in upper reaches of the system and shortage of water in the districts at the tail ends. Therefore, Sarda Sahayak Project was started in 1974 to meet the water requirements of tail end districts of Raebareli, Sultanpur, Pratapgarh, Jaunpur and Azamgarh and partly the districts Lakhimpur Khiri, Sitapur, Barabanki and Lucknow. The project was implemented to increase and extend irrigation in the lower reaches of Sharda canal system and to increase the irrigation supplies to command of Sharda feeder channel.
