Project Description
The Sapan Medium Irrigation Project is constructed in the Tapi Basin in Amravati district of Maharashtra. The project comprises of 798 m long earth dam with the maximum height of 55.34 m; 197.25 m long concrete dam having the maximum height of 47m with 57 m long left non-overflow block, 83.25 m long right non-overflow block and 57 m long gated spillway across river Sapan, a tributary of river Purna near Wazar village in Achalpur Taluka of Amravati district. The Ogee-shaped spillway has 3 radial gates each of size 12m x 6.50m to pass design flood of 1,347 m3/s. The canal system consists of 10.90 km long Left Bank Canal (LBC) to cover the Culturable Command Area (CCA) of 5176 ha in Achalpur and Chandur Bazar talukas of Amravati district of Maharashtra.
The ultimate irrigation potential of the project is 6,380 ha in 33 villages of Achalpur Taluka and 2 villages of Chandur Bazar Taluka of Amravati district out of which, 5669 ha of the ultimate irrigation potential will be created in Achalpur. The entire command area has been identified as DPAP area. The project also provide 0.144 Mm3 water for domestic use for Achalpur and 0.456 Mm3 of water for industrial use in Achalpur and Paratwada.
The construction work of the project started during 2000. The project was approved by the Planning Commission, Govt. of India for an estimated cost of Rs. 200.70 crore at 2005-06 price level in October 2007. The project has been included in AIBP under PM Package for Vidarbha Region during 2007-08. The project is complted during 2009-10 and total potentail created is 4735 hectare. the latest estimated cost of the project is Rs 87.34 crore.
