Project in Brief
Since commencement of Balimela hydroelectric project, there were several proposals for utilzation of Balimela tail race discharge for irrigation in Malkangiri valley, but ultimately Potteru irrigation project materialized. The regulated discharge of 59.43 cumec of tail water of Balimela power house is coveyed through 2 km long open channel and discharge into river Potteru, a tributary of Saberi at 2.5 km downstream of village Surlikonda where the same is tapped for irrigation purpose by construction of barrage. The CCA of the project is 61,036 hecatre and potential is 1,09,884 hectare. Main features of the project is as under:
1. A Masonry barrage of 98 meter long and 10.73 meter in height having 5 number of radial gates of size 15.24x 7.16 m with two number of under sluices.
2. Two head regulator for RMC and LMC with design discharge of 22.26 cumec and 39.48 cumec.
3. Two main canal viz i). Gompakonda Left Main canal 76.16 km long having 5 distributaries, ii). Tamsa Right main canal, 79.82 km long having 4 distributaries.
