Project Description
The Pothra Nalla Medium Irrigation Project is constructed in the Godavari Basin in Wardha district of Maharashtra. This project envisages 2,036 m long earth dam with maximum height of 18.21 m and 380.00 m long ungated spillway on the Pothra Nalla near Zunka village in Sumudrapur Taluka of Wardha district. The canal system consists of 56.00 km long Left Bank Canal (LBC), 37.00 km long Right Bank Canal (RBC) and the Distribution Network (DISNET) on canals to cater to the Culturable Command Area (CCA) of 8183 ha. The project on completion will create the annual ultimate irrigation potential of 9380 ha in Sumudrapur, Wardha, Hinganghat talukas of Chandrapur and Wardha districts. The entire command area lies in DPAP area.
The construction work on the project started in July 1978. The project was approved by the Planning Commission for Rs. 63.08 crore at 1999-2000 price level in December 2004.
The project has been included in AIBP under PM Package for Vidarbha Region during 2006-07. At the time of submission of the proposal i.e. up to March 2006, the Head works and RBC along with its Distribution Network (DISNET) were complete. 90% works of LBC and 30% works on its DISNET of LBC were complete. About 4221 ha of irrigation potential had been created till 03/2006. The balance works of the project along with the construction of watercourses to crate the balance irrigation potential of 5159 ha were included under AIBP. The project is completed during 2008-09.
