Muvattupuzha

The Muvattupuzha river has its origin at East of Erattupetta village in the district of Kottayam in Kerala state at 760 53' East longitude and 90 43' North latitude at an elevation of 1,200 m. The river has a length of 121 km and a drainage area of 1,554 sq.km. The three major tributaries of the river are the Thodupuzha Aar, the Kaliyar and the Kothamangalam Aar. There are two Hydrological Observation Stations maintained by CWC on this river/Tributory ie at Ramamangalam & Kalampur.

This basin experiences good rainfall and humid atmosphere through out the year. The normal daily mean temperature of this basin varies from 25.9°c to 28.7°c as observed at I. M. D Observatory. The Muvattupuzha basin is getting both South-West monsoon and North -East monsoon. The South- West monsoon begins in June and ends in September and North -East monsoon begins in October and ends in November. The average annual rainfall of this basin varies from minimum of 2779 mm to maximum of 4526 mm. The mean monthly wind velocity varies from 6.7 to 10.9 km/hr.
