Project Brief
The Mahan (Gulab Sagar) Project is a major project being constructed across river Mahan, a tributary of river Banas in Sone Basin near village Khaddi in Sidhi District of Madhya Pradesh. It envisages construction of a 182.5 m long with a maximum height of 46.00 m masonry dam to impound 104.61 m.cum of gross storage to annually irrigate 19,740 ha (in a CCA of 14,000 ha) in Sidhi district. The length of main canal is 57.0 km. The project envisages construction of following works under Stage I:
1. masonry dam across the Mahan river with maximum height of 46.0 m to impound gross storage of 104.61 m.cum. During the detailed design stage, possibility of hydropower generation of 0.4 MW (seasonal) was found feasible and accordingly necessary arrangement for intake structure in the dam is being provided. This cost is proposed to be charged under Stage II of the project, if feasible. The Hydrology Directorate of the CWC has suggested erection of crest gates only after observation of actual flow of the river for about 5 years. Therefore Stage I planning is restricted to construction of dam up to crest level, and with the storage available up to crest level of 104.61 m.cum to irrigate CCA of 14,000 ha.
2. A central spillway 99.00 m long in the main dam to safely pass the design flood of 4,017 cumec.
3. A right bank unlined canal 57 km long having a head discharge of 18.73 cumec to irrigate CCA of 14,000 ha (19,740 ha annually) in Sidhi District.
Under Stage II of the project, which is proposed to be taken up later, 6 nos. of Spillway Crest Gates of size 14 X 4.5 m will be provided to create an additional storage of 103.787 m.cum. This additional storage will be utilised to irrigate 8,600 ha land annually. Stage II proposal will be formulated separately after observing the actual flow of the river for about 5 years and establishing water availability and after getting techno economic clearance from CWC.
Techno-Economic Appraisal
The project has received Investment clearance of Planning Commission vide letter No. 2(224)/02-WR dated 24.09.2003 for an estimated cost of Rs 146.51 crore (2002).
Present Status
The project was started in the year 1984 and the project brought under AIBP during the year 2003-04.The dam is completed as per stage - I in the year 2009 and upto 3/2011 irrigation potential created is 4764 hectare.
