Brief Description

The lower Wunna Irrigation Project is a major irrigation project in Godavari basin comprising of two earthen dams across river Wunna (Wadgaon dam) and river Nand (Nand dam) respectively. A 2.88 km long feeder canal from Nand dam joins the LBC of Wadgaon dam at km 17.20. These dams are located in Umrer Tehsil of Nagpur district, Maharashtra. The CCA of the project is 24440 hectare and the potential of the project is 25545 hectare and will provide irrigation in Nagpur and Wardha district. Main features of the project are as under:

i. Wadgaon dam is 5043.50 meter long earthen dam with maximum height of 23.65 meter with ogee shaped gated masonry spillway of 307 meter long with discharging capacity of 10877 cumec. The spillway has 21 radial gates of size 12.0 m x 6.5 m

ii. Nand dam is 2513.25 meter long earthen dam with maximum height of 16.25 meter with ogee shaped gated masonry spillway of 100.50 meter long with discharging capacity of 5238 cumec. The spillway has 7 radial gates of size 12.0 m x 6.5 m

iii. 67.0 km long left bank canal and 12.0 km long right bank canal taking off from Wadgaon dam. A 2.88 km long feeder canal from Nand storage joins LBC from Wadgaon storage at km 17.20.

iv. Provision for supply of 41.00 MCM water to MIDC, Butibori (near Nagpur) and the towns of Hinghanghat and Sindhi are also included in the project.

Technical Advisory Committee on Irrigation and flood control approved the project in November 1989 at an estimated cost of Rs 87.55 crore (at 1988-89 price level) with CCA as 24440 hectare and potential of 28820 hectare. The potential has now been reduced to 25545 hectare as Govt of Maharashtra has made provision of 0.54 MCM of water for Borkhedi Water supply scheme from Wadgaon storage. The investment clearance from the Planning Commission has not been issued.

The project was started during VI five year plan and has completed during XI five year plan. Potential of 25545 hectare has been developed. The latest estimated cost of the project is Rs 324.57 crore.
