Project in Brief

The Lower Wardha Major Irrigation Project is being constructed in the Godavari Basin in the Wardha district of Maharashtra. The project envisages construction of the following components.

i. 8884 m long earth dam with the maximum height of 22.00 m and 580 m long composite masonry and concrete dam with the maximum height of 28 m having 462.50 m long central gated spillway with 60 m long non-overflow blocks on left flank and 57.50 m long blocks on right flank of the spillway across river Wardha near Dhanodi village in Arvi Taluka of Wardha district.

ii. 462.50 m long gated ogee-shaped spillway has 31 radial gates each of size 12m x 8m to pass design flood of 20,778.10 m3/s.

iii. Two barrages namely Pulgaon and Khard

iv. 44.425 km long Left Bank Main Canal (LBC) with maximum discharging at head of 37.124 cumecs.

v. Distribution network on LBC to cater to the Culturable Command Area (CCA) of 78,870 ha.The project on completion will create the annual ultimate irrigation potential of 63,333 ha.

vi. A provision of 12.07 Mm3 of water for drinking purpose and 40.20 Mm3 industrial use has been reserved for Pulgaon, Dhamangaon and its adjacent villages and MIDC, Dhamangaon. Other benefits would include Fisheries.

The project was approved by the Planning Commission, Govt. of India for an estimated cost of Rs. 857.70 crore at 2005-06 price level in March 2007 after its acceptance by the Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) in its 88th meeting. The latest estimated cost of the project of Rs. 2232.41 was approved by the Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) in its 108th meeting held on 4th January 2011.

Present Status

The project was started in the year The project has been included in AIBP under PM Package for Vidarbha Region during 2006-07. At the time of submission of the proposal i.e. up to March 2006, 98% earth dam, 65% of masonry works of spillway, 45% works on the main canal were complete. The dam and canal network is under construction and upto March 2011 potential of 15379 hectare is created.
