Project in Brief
Lower Suktel Irrigation Project is a major irrigation project located near village Magurguda in Bolangir block of Bolangir district under KBK region of Odisha. The dam site proposed across river Suktel in Mahanadi basin is at a distance of about 20 km from Bolangir town. The project envisages the construction of a 1410 m long & 30 m high earth dam, centrally located ogee crested 177 m long spillway, 890 m long and 16 m high, 6 m wide earthen right dyke, 412 m long, 3 m high, 6 m wide earthen left dyke, 16.58 km long Left Main Canal with Head regulator, 23.84 km long Right Main Canal with Head regulator and associated distribution network.
Total CCA of the project is 23,500 ha, out of which 20,816 ha lies in Bolangir district and the remaining 2,684 ha in adjoining Sonepur district. Further, this project will supply 17.89 million m3 of drinking water to Bolangir town. The project is a part of Long Term Action Plan (LTAP) for the KBK region.
The project was approved by the Planning Commission during 1999 for Rs.217.13 crore (1996 price level). The administrative approval from Department of Water Resources, Govt. of Odisha was accorded in the year 1999. The entire project has been included under AIBP since the year 1999-2000.The latest approved cost of the project is Rs.1041.81 crore (2009 price level), for which investment clearance has been accorded by Planning Commission.
Upto March 2011 no irrigation potential is created.
