Project in Brief
The Lower Dudhna Major Irrigation Project is being constructed in the Godavari basin in Parbhani district of Maharashtra. The project comprises of the following components.
i. 6581.20 m long earth dam with the maximum height of 18.52 m and 438.80 m long masonry/concrete dam of the maximum height of 28.60 m having 65 m long left non-overflow blocks, 303.30 m long gated spillway and 70.50 m long right non-overflow blocks across river Dudhna near Brahma-Wakdi village in Selu Taluka of Parbhani district.
ii. Ogee-shaped spillway having 20 radial gates each of size 12m x 8m to pass design flood of 7,844 m3/s.
iii. Two head regulators for two canals constructed on left flank and right flank.
iv. 69 km long Left Bank Canal (LBC) and 48 km long Right Bank Canal (RBC) having head discharge of 8.50 m3/s and 6.90 m3/s respectively.
v. Distribution network on LBC and RBC to irrigate CCA of 38264 ha in Parbhani and Jalna districts out of which 801 ha lies in Jalna. The canal system will create the annual ultimate irrigation potential of 44482 ha in Parbhani and Jalna districts, of which 932 ha is in Jalna.
vi. The project will also provide 6.44 Mm3 water for domestic use and 1.64 Mm3 water for industrial use.
The project was approved by the Planning Commission, Govt. of India in March 1983 for an estimated cost of Rs 53.2066 crore at price level 1980-81 after acceptance by the Technical Advisory Committee (TAC). The updated estimates for Rs. 1349.50 (2008-09) has received clearance of Planning Commission in the year 2010.
Present Status
The construction work of the dam started during 1992-93 and the works of canal system started during 2004-05.The project have been included under AIBP during 2005-06 to create irrigation potential of 44,482 hectare. The dam is now complete and the canal are under construction and upto March 2011 potential of 10819 hectare is created.
