Introduction

Kharung Project (Chhattisgarh) is an old completed tank, constructed during the year 1920-1930 across Kharung river a tributary of Shivnath river in Mahanadi basin in Bilaspur district of Chhattisgarh. The tank has gross storage of 195.12 MCM with live storage of 192.30 MCM (dead storage: 2.83 MCM). The canal system of the project was originally constructed to irrigate an area of 24,291 ha. Later on in the year 1970-1971, two more canals - Pondi distributary and Malhar distributary were constructed and the designed area was increased from 24,291 ha to 40,500 ha with a total 110 km long main canal. It is reported that at present 40,500 ha is being irrigated against designed area of 24,291 ha in 208 villages by encroaching freeboard of the canal. The canal system of the project as originally constructed and later on extended during 1970-71 comprises of Left Bank Canal (LBC) of 80.50 km, Right Bank Canal (RBC) of 29.50 km and distributaries & minors of 354.46 km.

ERM Project

The Kharung Tank project of Chhattisgarh is very old project and its canal system is in operation since 1930 in the areas of Ratanpur, Masturi and Bilaspur Tehsil of Bilaspur district. During all these years only minor maintenance works could be carried out with the result that condition of these canal systems have deteriorated over the time, thereby causing gradual increase in seepage. The project authorities have prepared ERM proposal of the project which mainly comprise of cement concrete lining in the bed as well as side of the canal system. The area proposed to be irrigated after ERM is also increased to 56,300 ha (40,500 ha existing Kharif + 8,300 ha Kharif additional + 7,500 ha Rabi additional) after cement concrete lining by way of saving seepage losses. The CCA of the project after ERM is increased to 66,402 ha and number of villages being benefited is 208.
Kharung Tank Project (Major-ERM-New) with these features has been accepted by the Advisory Committee of MoWR in its 105th meeting held on 25.06.2010. Planning Commission accorded Investment Clearance vide letter No. 2(421/2010-WR New Delhi dated 25.08.2010 for an estimated cost of Rs. 101.04 crore at price level 2008-09.
The project is brought under AIBP funding during 2010-11. So far irrigation potential of 6500 hectare has been created upto the end of March 2012 against 15800 hectare to be created under ERM.
