Project Proposal

The Karjan Reservoir Project is situated near Jitgadh village of Nanded Taluka, Dist. Narmada of Gujarat State across river Karjan, a left bank tributary of river Narmada, having its confluence downstream of Sardar Sarovar Project. The project envisages irrigation in CCA of 51000 ha area through its left and right bank canal system.

  • The project comprises of a concrete cum masonry dam in the river gorge portion having total length of 903 m consisting of 171.61 long spillway with 9 no. of radial gates of size 15.55m x 14.20m for passing design flood of 19620 cumecs and non overflow sections of 109.38 m and 622.01m length on right and left of the spillway. Maximum height of the dam from the deepest foundation is 100m. The dam impounds 630M.cum and 506.1 M.cum gross and live storage at FRL. Catchment area at the dam site is 354.83 sq.km out of which 31.08 sq.km area lies in Maharashtra.
  • The canal system comprises of Left Bank Main Canal (LBMC), and Right Bank Main canal (RBMC) and distribution system. The LBMC is a contour canal 51km long with carrying capacity of 28.30 cumecs at the head. The RBMC is 12.60 km. long with carrying capacity of 10.20 cumecs at the head.
  • The distribution system lined up to 8 ha block, will serve CCA of 51000 ha in left and right bank command. On full development it will irrigate 70380 ha area in Narmada and Bharuch districts of Gujarat with irrigation intensity of 138%. Rotational Water Supply (RWS) system of irrigation is being introduced in the project.

Technical Economic Appraisal

The project was initially approved by the Planning Commission in May, 1977 for an estimated cost of Rs.37.20 Crores. Planning Commission had subsequently approved the same for revised cost of Rs 183.37 crores at 1988-89 price level in September 1990(without CAD works).

The project was under World Bank Financial Assistance from April 1980 to October 1989, under credit No.1011-IN and under Credit No.1496-IN from November 1989 to March 1994. Thereafter the project works were being executed from the State Govt.’s own resources till Central Loan Assistance (CLA) under Accelerated Irrigation Benefit Programme, was granted from April, 1997.

Works of dam, spillway and RBMC were completed during the year 1986 and 1991 respectively. Major portion of LBMC (92%) except missing links in about 20 km length, had been completed before AIBP. In the distribution and water courses 79% works were completed before AIBP (March 1997). Total potential created before AIBP was 55730 hectare. In order to complete the remaining balance work the project as mentioned above it was brought under AIBP during 1997-98 to create remaining potential of 14650 hectare. The project was completed in all respect by 1999-2000.
