Brief Description
The Karapuzha Irrigation Project envisages an earthen dam with concrete spillway across Karapuzha river at Vazhavatta in Vythiri taluk of Wynad district for providing irrigation to an area of 5580 ha (CCA) say 5600 hectare in Vythiri and Sultan Bathery taluks of Wynad district of Kerala. The reservoir has a gross storage capacity of 76.50 M Cum and live storage capacity of 72.00 M Cum.
The Karapuzha river originating from Western Ghat in Wynad district, is a tributary of Panamaram river which is a tributary of Kabini river, a tributary of river Cauvery. The catchment area of Karapuzha river up to the dam site is 62.0 sq.km. and lies entirely in Kerala State. The dam is approachable by road from Kalpetta (15 km) which is the district head quarters of Wynad district. The nearest railhead and airport are at Kozhikode, 76 km. from Kalpetta.
Main Components of the Project:-
- An earthen dam with a concrete section on the right flank, 625 m long with maximum height of 28 m.
- A concrete spillway, 3 spans of 10 m each with radial gates.
- Three earthen saddle dams of total length 555 m at Pakkom, Cherupetta and Chingery.
- A steel outlet conduit of 2 m diameter through the right bulk head of spillway that bifurcates and delivers water in to the left bank and right bank canals.
- Left bank canal system to irrigate an area of 3,486 ha.
- Right bank canal system to irrigate an area of 2,114 ha.
So far the earthen dam and saddle dams have been completed and canal system is under progress. Upto March 2012 potential created is 608 hectare (CCA is 390 hectare). The project is scheduled to be completed by the end of March 2013. Cumulative expenditure on the project upto march 2012 is Rs 287.56 crore.
Techno-Economic Appraisal
The project started in 1974 and was approved by Planning Commission in April, 1978 at an estimated cost of Rs 7.60 crore envisaging irrigation to CCA of 5580 ha with ultimate irrigation potential of 9300 hectare. The CCA of the project was revised by the multi-disciplinary committee by Govt. of Kerala which suggested deferring the third phase (with CCA 885 Ha) and the revised CCA is 4715 ha and ultimate irrigation potential is 7355 ha. The tentative estimated cost of the project as per the 2007 schedule of rates is Rs 392.25 crores.
Accelerated Irrigation Benefit Programme
In order to expedite the progress of works the project was brought under AIBP during 2006-07 and at the time of inclusion in AIBP no irrigation potential was developed. Upto March 2012 the project has received CLA of Rs 2.719 crore. Against the AIBP component of Rs 128.0 crore the expenditure upto March 2012 is Rs 9.425 crore.
