Project in Brief

The Kar Medium Irrigation Project is constructed in the Godavari Basin in the Wardha district of Maharashtra. The project comprises of the following components.

  1. 802 m long earth dam from RD 80.00 m to 760.00 m and RD 1288.00 m to RD 1410.00 m with the maximum height of 16.15 m; 267 m long masonry dam with maximum height of 25.13 m having non-overflow blocks of 54m length on left flank and 41m length on right flank of spillway and 172 m long spillway from RD 1075.00 m to 1247.00 m across river Kar, a tributary of river Wardha near Khairi village in Karanja Taluka of Wardha district. The discharging capacity of 172 m long ungated ogee-shaped spillway is 1,909 m3/s.
  2. One Head-regulator on left flank at RD 365.00 m.
  3. 33.30 km long Left Bank Canal (LBC) having head discharge of 4.37 m3/s.
  4. Distribution network (DISNET) on LBC to cater to the Culturable Command Area (CCA) of 8220 ha.

The project on completion will create the annual ultimate irrigation potential of 6744 ha (1264 ha in Karanja Taluka (Wardha District) benefiting 11 villages, 3667 ha in Asti Taluka (Wardha District) benefiting 12 villages and 1813 ha in Narkhed Taluka (Nagpur District) benefiting 11 villages). The project will also provide 1.86 Mm3 water for domestic use. The other benefits include Fisheries.

The construction work on the project started in November 1987.The project was approved by the Planning Commission, Govt. of India for an estimated cost of Rs. 170.04 crore at 2005-06 price level on March 23, 2007 after its acceptance by the Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) in its 88th meeting held on March 02, 2007.

At the time of submission of the proposal i.e. up to March 2006, 100% earth dam, 99% of spillway, 60% works on the main canal and 10% works of Distributaries and minors were complete. About 3500 ha of irrigation potential has been created till 03/2006. The balance works of the project along with construction of watercourses to create 3244 ha of the ultimate irrigation potential were included under AIBP. The project is now completed during 2008-09 and potential of 5175 hectare is created.
