Project in Brief

The Jamuna Irrigation Scheme, the first major irrigation project of Assam, was commissioned in the year 1969 for providing irrigation facilities to 28256 ha (AIA) having CCA of 27705 ha spread over Karbi-Anglong and Nagaon districts of Assam and since then it is in continuous operation. The project is designed to tap Jamuna river near Bakuliaghat of Karbi-Anglong district by construction of a diversion weir on river Jamuna and extending canal system on the left bank of Jamuna river to cover the commanded area bounded by Jamuna river itself on the north, Bhalukmari Purana Kaki-Bakulia road and part of railway line on the south and then extending in a westerly direction beyond Dobaka, Nilbagan, Hojai road.

The weir is located on river, Jamuna tributary of Brahamputra river. The weir is 302.36 meter long and length of main canal is 4.724 km with head discharge capacity of 19.81 cumec. The system is having three distributaries.

Modernisation of Scheme

The Modernisation of Jamuna Irrigation Scheme was approved by the Planning Commission in the year 1996-97 for Rs 60.27 crore vide No. 2(42) 97 & CAD dated 24.02.1997 for rehabilitation and modernization of existing facilities of the project, thereby, creating an additional annual Irrigation Potential of 13758 ha raising the A.I.A of the project from designed 28,256.00 ha to 42014 ha. The modernization scheme also envisaged restoration of the 5000 ha of AIA lost earlier.

Modernization of Jamuna Irrigation Scheme was included under AIBP in the year 2001-2002 and the implementation of the scheme was started in 2001-02. Though it was proposed to be achieved an additional area of 13758 ha but on completion of the scheme in the year 2009, only 12758 ha is physically achieved by increasing the total potential to 41014 ha (AIA) against targeted 42014 ha (AIA).
