Brief Description of the Project

The IGNP stage-II starts from the tail of stage-I i.e. from Km 189 of IGNP main canal. Indira Gandhi Nahar Project, Stage-ll comprises of 256 km long (Km189 to Km445) main canal and the requisite distribution system to irrigate CCA of 12.44 lakh ha consisting of 8.02 lakh ha under flow irrigation and 4.42 lakh ha under lift canals with irrigation intensity of 80% for flow and around 60% for lift. Stage-II would provide irrigation to 9.01 lakh ha in the districts of Sriganganagar, Hanumangarh, Churu, Bikaner, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer and Barmer. IGNP, Stage-ll comprises the components of works as follows:

Techno-Economic Appraisal

The IGNP was originally approved by the Planning Commission in the year 1957 for an estimated cost of Rs.66.43 Cr in a combined shape which was revised with the proposal to execute the project components in two stages i,e; St-I & St-ll in 1970. While IGNP, St-I, with its CCA of 5.43 lakh ha was approved by the Planning Commission for an estimated cost of Rs. 110.20 cr in 1970, the IGNP, St-II with its CCA of 6.07 lakh ha was cleared by TAC in 1972 for an estimated cost of Rs.89.12 Cr. The IGNP, St-I has been completed in 1992 except for some ERM components.

The IGNP, St-II was revised in accordance with the changed scope i.e; increase in CCA and inclusion of six irrigation schemes and was subsequently approved by the Planning Commission in 1987. The project was again revised in view of detailed feasibility report of the project prepared by WAPCOS as well as lining of water courses and further increase in irrigation benefits in terms of CCA. The third revision for an estimated cost of Rs. 3398.91 Cr. was cleared by TAC in June 96 and the same was accepted by the Planning Commission on 11.3.1998. The fourth revision for an estimated cost of Rs. 6921.32 Cr. was cleared by TAC in January 2011 and the same was accepted by the Planning Commission on 8.6.2011. Upto March 2011 potential created is 8,56,000 hectare against 9.01 lakh ha. The project is nearing completion.
