1 | Hirehalla Dam | Dam |
Brief Description of the Project
Hirehalla originates in the hills of Dharwar district and traverses nearly 67 km in Dharwar and Koppal districts before it joins Tungabhadra reservoir about 24 km upstream of Tungabhadra Dam. Another stream called Veerapurahalla joins Hirehalla just downstream of the proposed dam. Agricultural lands in Koppal taluk are mainly rainfed. These areas are affected by famines due to scanty rainfall and consequent failure of crops. Also the streams carry a lot of silt to Tungabhadra reservoir and due to this the capacity of the reservoir is gradually getting reduced. Therefore this project was conceived to facilitate irrigation to the rainfed agricultural lands and also to control silt that is carried by Hirehalla to the Tungabhadra reservoir.
The project envisages construction of a storage dam across the Hirehalla and Veerapurahalla before their confluence and canals on both banks to irrigate an area of 8330 ha (Ultimate potential). CCA of the project is 8010 hectare. The dam site is located near Kinnal village in Koppal taluk of Koppal district. Components, of the project in brief is as under:
The Hirehalla dam is of earthen embankment, 3.6 km long and having a maximum height of 15.00 m with a concrete spillway between Hirehalla and Veerapurahalla measuring 89.50 m in length. The spillway is provided with 6 nos. of 12m x 8m size radial gates to pass a design flood discharge of 2945 cumec. Length of RBC is 25 km with a discharge capacity of 1.559 cumec at head, to irrigate 3330 ha. The LBC runs to a length of 24.6 km with a discharge capacity of 2.337 cumec at head. Irrigable area under this canal is 5000 ha.
The project was approved for Rs.6.35 crore (SR 1977-78) by the Planning Commission vide No.II-20(6)77/I&CAD, dt.5.4.1977. The project is complted during 2008-09 and full potential is created.
