Brief Description of the Project

Hippargi Irrigation Project comprises of a barrage across river Krishna near Hippargi village of Jamakhandi taluka in Bagalkot District of Karnataka state to impound 6.0 TMC of water and two foreshore lift irrigation schemes on left bank at Halyal and Ainapur village of Athani taluka of Belgaum District. The total water utilization proposed for the scheme is 12.10 TMC, out of which 11.64 TMC is earmarked for irrigation and balance 0.46 TMC for drinking water and industrial use. By utilizing 11.64 TMC, it is proposed to irrigate 74,742 ha (CCA) in the drought prone areas of Bagalkot and Belgaum Districts.

i. An earthen flood bank with top RL 535.00 m, length of 5130.60 m on left flank and 300 m on right flank, with 169.92 M.cum of gross and 134.74 M.cum of live storage.

ii. A WES type spillway 352.68 m lengths with 22 No. of vertical gates of size 13.72 m x 8.23 m and with crest level at RL 516.64 m.

iii. Two separate foreshore lift irrigation schemes at Ainapur and Halyal on left bank of Krishna River to irrigate an area of 74,742 ha.

The brief details of the lift irrigation schemes are as under:

Ainapur LIS: Under this LIS, water will be lifted from the foreshore of the reservoir to provide irrigation to an area of 22,662 ha (CCA) by means of East and West canals of length 27.52 km and 52.00 km respectively.

Halyal LIS: Under this LIS water will be lifted from foreshore of the reservoir to provide irrigation to an area of 20,635 ha (CCA) by means of Halyal East and West canals of length 40.50 km and 21.48 km respectively.

Karimasuti LIS: Under this LIS water will be lifted at km 20 of Halyal east canal to irrigate 22,400 ha (CCA) of area from Karimauti East and West canals of length 74.45 km and 36.36 km respectively.

Savalgi-Tungal LIS: Under this LIS water will be lifted at km 40 of Halyal east canal to irrigate 9,045 ha (CCA) of area from East and West canals of length 23.56 km and 7.42 km respectively.

The project is approved by Planning Commission in the year 2008 for an estimated cost of Rs 1521.78 crore.

Present Status

The project is getting AIBP assistance since 2008-09 and so far the barrage is completed. The canal network as well as lift portion is under progress. Upto March 2012 irrigation potential of 52,000 hectare is created against 74,742 hectare.
