Brief Description
The River Gumani originates in the Rajmahal Hills in Sahibganj district of Jharkhand State. It flows for 39.5 km. up to the barrage site. After traversing another 67 km., the river joins Ganga River in Murshidabad district of West Bengal. The river is rain fed and carries high discharges during the monsoon months. During lean season, it almost dries up. Construction of a barrage on the River Gumani at village Petkhasa in Sahibganj district of Jharkhand State has been taken up to provide assured irrigation to the area lying in its command during kharif season. The project will help in improving the economic conditions of the tribal people by providing irrigation to 22,923 ha. of Culturable Command Area, 16194 ha.
The Planning Commission approved the project in 1976 for implementation at a cost of Rs. 383.99 lakhs. The work on the scheme commenced in 1977 and continued at a slow pace until 1997-98 when it was brought under AIBP. So far no irrigation potential is created and the barrage is yet to be completed.
