Brief Description of the Project

Guddada Mallapura Lift Irrigation Scheme, located downstream of Honkan barrage on Varada river near Byatanal village of Hanagal Taluka, Haveri district, envisages lifting 1.00 TMC of water from Varada River for irrigating 5261 ha (13000 Acres) of semi-dry crops in 4156 ha and wet crops in 1105 ha during kharif season to provide irrigation benefits to chronically drought prone areas in Byadagi taluk of Haveri district.

The various components of the project is as under:

1st Stage Lift:-

· Intake Channel: A 90 m long cement concrete intake channel with bed slope of 1 in 2000 and design capacity of 5.46 cumec (1.5 times the required discharge).

· Jack well-cum-Pump house: It is proposed to construct a sump well-cum- pump house to install 4 nos. of 1050 HP each Vertical Turbine pumps, proposed to lift 3.64 cumec of water from RL 529.00 m to RL of 594.00 m.

· Rising Main: 1st Stage: It is proposed to provide 4 nos. of 1600 mm dia. mild steel pipes for a length of 6306 m and for a static head of 66.00 m

· Ridge cistern (Delivery Chamber): 1st stage Ridge cistern is proposed to be constructed with bed at RL of 591.00 m of size 10.75 m x 10.75 m and is designed for 1½ minute (90 Seconds) storing capacity.

· Gravity Canal :- From this ridge cistern, a gravity Canal takes off with a head discharge of 3.64 cumec to carry water to 2nd stage pumping station as well as 1st stage irrigation canal.

2nd Stage Lift:-

At the end of gravity canal it is proposed to construct an Under Ground (UG) sump cum pump house. The U.G. sump will provide 1.46 cumec water to 1st stage canal (Sudambi canal) and 2.05 cumec to 2nd stage pumping. For second stage pumping, the pumps are Centrifugal type 3 nos. of 550 HP each to lift 2.05 cumec of water from RL 587.00 m to RL of 620.00 m.

· Rising Main: 2nd stage: It is proposed to provide 1 row of, 1200 mm dia MS pipes for 3100 m long with a static head of 33.00 m. · Ridge cistern (Delivery Chamber): 2nd Stage Ridge cistern is proposed to be constructed with bed at RL of 617 M of size 8.50 m x 8.50 m and is designed for 1½ minute (90 Seconds) storing capacity.

Distrbutaries:

· One distributory will take off at km. 10.00 of gravity canal-1 and will provide 0.13 cumecs water to irrigate an area of 188.18 ha.

· From main canal of 1st lift (Sudambi canal) it is planned to construct 5 distributaries at different chainages as shown in cut off statement to irrigate a command area of 2118.57 ha. The combined length of these distributaries is 10.59 km.

· Total 9 distributaries are proposed under 2nd lift (Kaginele canal) at different chainages to irrigate a command area of 2954.25 ha. The combined length of these distributaries is 19.175 km.

The project has received investment clearance of Planning Commission in the year 2009 for an estimated cost of Rs 115.40 crore.

Present status

The different components of the project is under execution and so far no potential (upto march 2012) is created.
