Project in Brief
This Dhansiri Irrigation Project is being constructed across the river Dhansiri, a tributary of river Brahmaputra near the state boundary with Bhutan and Arunachal Pradesh. This is mainly an Irrigation Project, but it was subsequently decided to take advantage of the five canal falls to install five powerhouses of 4 MW each. The project envisages construction of 160 m long diversion barrage at Bhairabkunda and the main canal takes off from right bank of the barrage.
BARRAGE
The length of the barrage is 160 m with maximum height of 13.25 m. It consists of 4 bays of river sluices 16 m each. The under sluices have two bays of 16 m each. The spillway is provided with 3 bays of 16 m each. There are two nos. of divide walls of 2 m thickness.
HEAD REGULATOR
The head regulator of 37.50 m length is on the right bank of the barrage to regulate release of water in the right bank main canal for a design capacity of 68 cumec with six bays of 5 m each. The construction of head regulator is completed in all respect.
CANAL SYSTEM
The right bank lined main canal is 21.20 km long with 5 nos. of branch canals. The distribution system comprises of minors and sub minors of total 320.23 km length.
HYDRO POWER STATIONS
The Assam State Electricity Board has taken up construction of five power houses at five falls on main canal for total installed capacity of 20 MW to utilize the total drop of 45.72 m available along the canal bed.
Techno-Economic Appraisal
The Planning Commission had accorded investment clearance for the project in 1975 for an estimated cost of Rs 15.83 Crore vide Planning Commission letter no. II/IS (I)/75(I) dated 25th June 1975. The TAC of the Ministry of Water Resources had subsequently accepted the 1st revised project estimate of Rs 158.32 crore in November 1993. The 2nd revised estimate projected to cost Rs 401.24 crore at 2004 price level has been accepted by TAC of Ministry of Water Resources, New Delhi. The Investment Clearance was accorded by the Planning Commission vide letter No. 2(315)/05-WR dated 08.08.2007.
Present Status
The construction of barrage and installation of gates/ hoisting arrangement was completed in 1987 and 1992 respectively. Till now is about 99% in main & branch canal 80% in distribution system is completed. The project received CLA under AIBP since 1996-97.
The total potential created upto March 2011 is 41258 ha against the ultimate potential of 83366 ha.
